Choosing where to live in Marbella with a family involves schools, safety, community, amenities and budget. We break down every zone so you can make the right decision.

Finding Your Family's Home in Marbella

Moving a family to a new country is a major decision, and choosing the right neighbourhood in Marbella can make the difference between a seamless, joyful transition and a frustrating one. After helping hundreds of international families relocate to the Costa del Sol, we have deep knowledge of what each area offers, and what it lacks.

This guide cuts through the marketing language to give you an honest assessment of every major family-friendly zone in Marbella.

What Families Should Prioritise

Before diving into specific areas, establish your priorities:

1. Schools, What curriculum? Language of instruction? Driving distance?

2. Community, Do you want to be surrounded by other expats, or integrate into Spanish society?

3. Space, Apartment or house with garden? Pool essential?

4. Safety, All of Marbella is extremely safe by European standards, but some areas are quieter

5. Budget, Both purchase/rental price AND ongoing costs (community fees, school fees)

6. Activities for children, Beach access, sports clubs, playgrounds, parks

Zone by Zone: Family Assessment

Nueva Andalucía ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best Overall

The verdict: The undisputed top choice for international families, particularly from Northern Europe.

Nueva Andalucía (Golf Valley) is where the majority of internationally-minded families with children end up, and with very good reason. The combination of spacious properties, good value, proximity to excellent schools, a large and welcoming expat community and beautiful natural surroundings is unmatched elsewhere in Marbella.

Schools nearby:

  • Aloha College (5 min), IB curriculum, highly regarded, international student body
  • Laude San Pedro (10 min), Cambridge A-Levels, strong pastoral care
  • Colegio International Laude (10 min)

Typical family property: 3-bed villa with pool, 200m², garden: €700,000-1,100,000

Monthly rental equivalent: €3,000-5,000/month

What families love: The Golf Valley's network of walking paths and green spaces gives children freedom to roam in a way that feels increasingly rare in Europe. The local community is genuinely welcoming, Dutch, Belgian, German and British families have created a warm social fabric of school runs, after-school activities and weekend barbecues.

What to watch for: Traffic on the main access roads during school run hours can be congested. No direct beach access (5-10 min drive to nearest beach).

Marbella East (Elviria / Las Chapas) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The verdict: Excellent for families wanting more space, better value and beautiful beaches.

Marbella East is quietly becoming one of the most popular family areas on the entire coast. The beaches here, particularly Las Chapas and Artola, are among the finest on the Costa del Sol, and the residential atmosphere is genuinely neighbourhood-like rather than resort-like.

Schools nearby:

  • English International College (5 min), long-established, British curriculum
  • Colegio Novaschool Marbella (10 min), bilingual, strong primary section

Typical family property: 4-bed villa with pool: €550,000-900,000

What families love: The sense of community is palpable. There are excellent Spanish-speaking families integrated with the international community, giving children genuine bilingual development. The beaches are spectacular and far less crowded than the western coast.

What to watch for: Slightly further from Puerto Banús and the Golden Mile. Fewer restaurants and shops within walking distance than western Marbella.

Golden Mile ⭐⭐⭐

The verdict: Exceptional if budget is not a constraint; less practical for everyday family life.

The Golden Mile is magnificent, but it is primarily a prestige address rather than a family neighbourhood in the traditional sense. Properties are spectacular, the location is central, and security is excellent. However, the area lacks the community infrastructure, schools within walking distance, playgrounds, local shops, that makes everyday family life easy.

Best for: UHNW families with live-in staff, families spending only part of the year in Marbella, buyers prioritising prestige and investment value above all.

Typical family property: 5-bed villa: €2,500,000-15,000,000

Estepona ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The verdict: Fantastic value, authentic atmosphere, ideal for families committed to long-term residency.

Estepona has transformed dramatically and now offers an exceptional family environment. The restored old town is safe, walkable and full of character. There is a genuine Spanish-expat community mix that children thrive in. Prices are significantly lower than Marbella, meaning families get substantially more space for their budget.

Schools nearby:

  • Laude San Pedro (20 min drive)
  • Several good bilingual Spanish schools in Estepona town

Typical family property: 4-bed villa with pool: €450,000-700,000

What families love: The authenticity. Children grow up speaking fluent Spanish because the community is genuinely integrated. The beaches are excellent and never as crowded as Marbella's western coast.

What to watch for: 25-35 minutes drive to Puerto Banús and Marbella's international schools. Better suited to families who genuinely want to integrate into Spanish life rather than maintain a primarily expat social world.

Sierra Blanca ⭐⭐⭐

The verdict: Ultra-secure and ultra-private, ideal for high-profile families requiring exceptional security.

Sierra Blanca's gated hilltop community offers a level of security and privacy unmatched anywhere on the Costa del Sol. For families where security is a primary concern, diplomats, business leaders, public figures, it is the obvious choice.

What families love: Complete security, extraordinary views, a strong sense of community among residents.

What to watch for: Not walkable. Children need to be driven everywhere. The rarefied atmosphere, while safe, can feel isolating for children accustomed to a more social neighbourhood environment.

School Fees: What to Budget

SchoolCurriculumAnnual Fees
Aloha CollegeIB€10,000-16,000
Laude San PedroCambridge€9,000-15,000
English Int'l CollegeBritish National€8,000-13,000
Colegio NovaschoolBilingual Spanish€4,000-7,000

Most schools also charge registration fees, activity fees and materials, adding 10-20% to the above figures.

Our Family Relocation Verdict

For most families: Nueva Andalucía is the right answer. It combines the best schools, the strongest community, good property value and a lifestyle that children, particularly those from Northern Europe, adapt to with remarkable ease.

For families on a tighter budget: Estepona delivers extraordinary value and a genuinely authentic living experience.

For families requiring maximum security: Sierra Blanca or a gated Golden Mile property.
